For those of you that loved Band of Brothers
New HBO series Masters of the air.

Still think that BoB was probably the best mini series ever made and this is Speilberg and Hanks again, its going to be good.

Oh how disappointing. I thought this was news of a spin-off called Randy Sisters.

Couldn't agree more Grumpster.

The episode where they find the concentration camp is one of the finest bits of TV ever made despite the awful subject. I've seen it at least half a dozen times now, and it still gets me every time. Weirdly, the bit that really does me is not any of the real horror that you see and the thought that man could do that to fellow man, but when Liebgott has to tell the survivors to go back into their pens. And the bit where one of the survivors does the salute.

The Pacific was good, and I thought better on the second watch through, but had too many characters and skipped around too much. Also missed out the best one from the book with the guy that served on the carriers

Who the fuck turned off BoB half way through?????

I have gone for 40 years on this earth where only one piece of film or television has ever given me goose pimples or made me feel even slightly emotional and BoB gets me every single time at the end.

Got shivers now thinking about it.

Going back to Band of Brothers have visited Normandy quite a few times now. Last year took in areas around Sword then second day around Utah / Omaha. They have a lot of Winters kit on display at the Dead Man's Corner museum at St Come Du Mont.

Poor old Pacific had no chance after BoB, as it is a programme that to many including me will never be bettered.

Enjoyed the Pacific, but was still an anti climax in my heart as I expected something equal or better than BoB.

Have watches BoB around 7 times all in, but will probably never bother with Pacific again.

Pedant,

I beg to differ. I went to Saint Nazaire this year and it's still standing as are the one's at Brest. L'Orient. Allies destroyed Saint Nazaire but couldn't destroy the U-Boat pens. One of the sites is home to the French submarine fleet.

Re: For those of you that loved Band of Brothers
Strategic bombing (as it was known) was area bombing, with the intent of destroying enemy infrastructure and industrial capacity.

Tactical bombing is going after specific assets - Tirpitz, V1 launch sites, U Boat pens etc)

Post-War analysis of strategic bombing showed that whatever got bombed, more often than not, came back quickly and with greater productivity.

Once a U Boat pen (say) was fucked by a Tallboy or Grand Slam it stayed fucked.

Once a factory was flattened by a carpet of 500 or 1000lbers, it was quickly rebuilt and usually more efficient than before.

A bombing Strategy is to do with long term planning and the consequences (Hiroshima) and tactical Bombing would refer to influencing a specific part of a battle through bombing.

The last episode of BoB is one the greatest bits of tv ever

Re: For those of you that loved Band of Brothers
I hope it's better than the Pacific. It had its moments but some of it was poor, with endless scenes of a crap main character badly acting, by looking solemnly into the distance in every other scene. Never been able to watch it again, whilst I've rewatched BoB's almost every year since it was made.

Re: For those of you that loved Band of Brothers
Not in any way to dispute or diminish the courage of the bomber crews - both Yank and ours took horrific casualties - but the assertion that:

"The "Mighty Eighth", as they were called due to their heavy bomber effectiveness, contributed greatly to the defeat of Hitler and Germany. "

is pretty well unsupported by every post-war analysis of the effectiveness of strategic bombing. Most concluded that strategic bombing was, if anything, counter productive.

Tactical bombing - such as by 617 and 5 squadrons, on the other hand....

Stomper couldn't agree more.i dought we have the budget unfortunately.
Band of brothers is pretty much faultless.the last episode especially had me in bits.Pacific also deserves a mention.
It's would be brilliant to see a series about British servicemen in the same light but would take some doing.

They should do a series on the formation, and activities of the British Commandos

Yeah agreed with that .... just 2 magnificent pieces of TV and as a poster said it's a shame that we cannot do anything on HBO's scale... Stephen Ambrose (a US military historian) wrote both books for BofB's & the Pacific... he also wrote a magnificent piece called Pegasus Bridge (about Howard and the Ox & Bucks) ... whilst I was reading it I was thinking all the time... shit this would make a superb series...

Would love to see a BoB type series about a British army unit or perhaps the RAF.... I am not holding my breath though.
